The carcasses of two juvenile Bull sharks have been found, with their fins removed, washed up on the Queensland coast by a local woman out walking her dog.
Some forms of shark fishing are allowed in Queensland, however shark finning is illegal with fines of up to Aus$100,000 possible. There have been no other cases of finned sharks washing up onto the Sunshine coast being reported.
A Queensland Fisheries spokeswoman was quoted as saying “Not only is the practice of finning sharks and dumping their bodies illegal and wasteful, but it is simply inhumane to treat living animals in this way. Some shark fishing is legal in Queensland. However shark finning is illegal and will not be tolerated. Under Queensland legislation, anyone taking a shark fin must also retain the body of the shark. These rules are in place to act as a deterrent to targeting these animals for their fins alone.”
Shark finning is still a huge problem world wide with shark fin soup still being served in restaurants around the world including in many western countries and not even species such as Whale sharks are safe.
Stop Shark Finning on Facebook.
