Now Egypt wants the record in mass-diving

It was only two weeks ago a British attempt was announced. Now an Egyptian group has said that they will also have a go for the record entry in the Guinness Book for the Most People Scuba Diving Simultaneously.

The Egypt Scuba Challenge wants to get 3000 divers into the water off Hurghada. The event will take place on the 26 July if the weather permits it.

The organizers are the Egyptian Divers Syndicate in co-operation with HEPCA (Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association). “We have been looking for a spot that is suitable to hold such a huge amount of divers without any detrimental effect on the environment and have agreed on the outside area of the New Marina in Hurghada,” says HEPCA.

According to HEPCA the location has a large sandy plateau at 12-13 metres of depth. 3000 divers should fit in this area. The organizers say that there is hardly any marine life only plenty of rubbish. Therefore the dive is aiming for two records because the group wants to have the world record for the largest underwater clean-up as well.

The local dive centres and travel agents have been asked to support the event. It should promote Egypts tourism and raise environmental awareness at the same time. Every diver is invited to take part of the mass-dive.

“If you’d like to be part of the world record attempt and are a qualified diver, start searching for flights to Egypt and we look forward to seeing you here in July,” says HEPCA. People need the minimum qualification PADI Open Water Diver. Enquiries should be sent to urte@hepca.com.

So the Egyptians try it before the British do. The British attempt will take place in Swanage in September 2011. The record right now stands at 2486 divers. It was set in Indonesia 2009.
