Today the participants of Nancy’s course have the opportunity to repeat difficult exercises and exams. For example, six of the ten candidates must pass the physics exam this evening. There are no new exercises scheduled for today. The candidates are able to recover a little bit since tomorrow is the first part of the instructor examination (IE).
During the past ten days we have looked over the shoulders of Nancy and her team. And we watched the IDC candidates as well. They are adjusted to us now and no longer notice our camera in their face. Of course we take advantage of this and reveal the secrets of the candidates as they struggled to cope with stressful situations. Pictures sometimes say more than a 1000 words:
Let us start with Ramy. His formula for success is extensive stretching in the morning. Before every dive we notice athletic exercises. Maybe the right description would be a neoprene ballet. We reckon this routine keeps him fit for the water work.
Rashad’s daily ritual is a dip in the rinse pool. Every day he has a little rinse before going into the sea. In addition he always wears a coloured headdress, which is clearly his trademark.
Depending on his mood, taste and daily fashion sensibilities it can be worn in different variations. As well, Rashad − much like Yasser − has a very personal relationship with his diving equipment.
Peter strengthens his mental power by Superman-like flights through the water. This stunt must be incredible healthy for his self-esteem. His colleagues seem to have fun with it as well.
Alvaro seems to compensate for changing moods with different beard lengths.
The instructor trainers help each other as well. Nancy and Hendrik are obviously a good team. Their explanations and banter are synchronized and feed off one another.
Today, Hendrik’s under water gestures seem very strong. Nobody shall make an error by accident. But we are still not quite sure what he wants to tell us: Elephant? Ride a motorbike? Play the guitar?
With the exception of Lucy everyone has passed the physics exam. Unfortunately this means she is not allowed to take part in the IE tomorrow. But she has the opportunity to participate in the next IDC. This is not a big deal, Nancy says. After all Lucy is the youngest of the candidates and obviously her divemaster training was not the best. Lucy will gain more experience if she does the IDC once more, Nancy adds.
Tomorrow will be exciting. It is the first day of the IE. We will be there as well and wish our candidates all the best.
